NATO and Ukraine present validated drone-forecasting model and artillery-planning AI prototype

As of Published

What happened

NATO Allied Command Transformation and Ukraine’s Armed Forces, supported by the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC), jointly developed and presented two AI solutions at a three-day seminar in Vilnius. Model No. 13 analyzes historical data, weather and battlefield conditions to forecast the intensity, location, timing and types of enemy UAV activity near the line of contact. It has been validated against real-world datasets and is ready to be integrated into Ukrainian situational-awareness systems.

Model No. 32 is a decision-support tool that uses mission requirements, available weapons and ammunition, firing positions, logistics, ballistics and engagement-zone constraints to rule out infeasible artillery options and rank viable plans. A prototype has been handed to Ukrainian stakeholders for testing and verification.

Why it matters

Model No. 13 could give Ukrainian situational-awareness systems forecasts of where, when, how intensely and with which UAV types enemy drone activity is likely to occur, using battlefield and environmental data. Model No. 32 is designed to reduce the manual comparison of artillery options by filtering out plans that violate logistical, ballistic, firing-position or engagement-zone constraints, then ranking the alternatives that remain. The tools could shorten decision-making time and improve the fire-engagement loop. Wider use of the artillery model in other Ukrainian combat units would depend on successful testing and validation.

What to watch

Whether Model No. 32 completes Ukrainian testing and verification, opening the way for wider use in other Ukrainian combat units.
