What happened
Ukrainian company EDRONE has developed DRAKON, an unmanned aerial system for reconnaissance and observation. The company says the aircraft uses proprietary pseudorandom retuning of its operating frequency to support missions in areas affected by electronic warfare. DRAKON is specified with up to 50 minutes of endurance, a cruising speed of 70 km/h, a maximum speed of 100 km/h, an operating altitude of up to 300 meters, a guaranteed communications range of 10 km and a stated flight distance of at least 20 km. Its payload includes a SIYI ZR-10 camera with 10× optical zoom on a three-axis stabilized gimbal, with total payload capacity of up to 0.5 kg.
Why it matters
The reported frequency-retuning feature is designed to help DRAKON continue reconnaissance and observation missions in an electronic-warfare environment. Its 10 km guaranteed communications range, stated flight distance of at least 20 km, stabilized 10×-zoom camera and up to 50-minute endurance define the system’s advertised operating concept. EDRONE’s production of frames, motors, propellers and electronics also gives the company a domestic component-production base for the system.
